Sports Premium

The government is providing funding to provide new and substantial primary school sport funding. The funding is being jointly provided by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport, and will see money going directly to primary school headteachers to spend on improving the quality of sport and PE for all their children. Each school will receive £16,000 plus an extra £10 per pupil each year. Here at Dundry CE Primary School that will mean around £16950 a year. The money can only be spent on sport and PE provision in school

In addition to this we will now receive the same amount again which will be generated from the Soft Drinks Industry Levy which will provide revenue in 2018 to 2019 for the Healthy Pupils Capital Fund (HPCF).This funding is intended to facilitate an improvement in children and young people’s physical and mental health by increasing and improving access to, and use of, facilities for physical activity, healthy eating, mental health and wellbeing and medical conditions. This could include kitchens, dining facilities, changing rooms, playgrounds and sports facilities.

Schools must spend the funding on improving their provision of PE and sport, but they will have the freedom to choose how they do this.

Possible uses for the funding might include:

  • hiring specialist PE teachers or qualified sports coaches to work with primary teachers when teaching PE
  • supporting and engaging  the least active children through new or additional Change4Life clubs
  • paying for professional development opportunities for teachers in PE and sport
  • providing cover to release primary teachers for professional development in PE and sport
  • running sport competitions, or increasing pupils’ participation in the School Games
  • buying quality assured professional development modules or materials for PE and sport
  • providing places for pupils on after school sports clubs and holiday clubs
  • pooling the additional funding with that of other local schools

Schools must use the funding to make additional and sustainable improvements to the quality of PE and sport on offer. We aim to

  • develop or add to the PE and sport activities that our school already offers
  • build capacity and capability within the school to ensure that improvements made now will benefit pupils joining the school in future years

Accountability

From September 2013, schools have been held to account over how they spend their additional, ring-fenced funding.

There are 5 key indicators that schools should expect to see improvement across:

  • the engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity – the Chief Medical Officer guidelines recommend that all children and young people aged 5 to 18 engage in at least 60 minutes of physical activity a day, of which 30 minutes should be in school
  • the profile of PE and sport is raised across the school as a tool for whole-school improvement
  • increased confidence, knowledge and skills of all staff in teaching PE and sport
  • broader experience of a range of sports and activities offered to all pupils
  • increased participation in competitive sport
